Little Frogs

I love rainy days when frogs come from my pond and hop about on the paving outside my knit cave, looking for food. So, perhaps it’s inevitable that I ended up designing a little knitted frog. I knit the frogs in Jamieson’s Spindrift Shetland wool, crocheting the toes. I hand wash them brutally, alternating very hot and very cold water, to wet felt them down, finally giving them glass eyes and embroidering mouths and nostrils in cotton floss, and adding a hanging loop. Lastly I top them with tiny golden crowns, ready for kissing.

I used shade ‘Leprechaun’ – one of my favourite Spindrift shades (but then so many of them are – I love my shadecard!)

I’ve also made extra small frogs (about 4.5cm long), to which I’ve sewn on pin backs, perfect for pinning onto knitwear or using as a shawl or scarf pin. I’m very impatient with any pieces of clothing that need any attention, so the only way I’m prepared to wear slithery scarves that want to fall off, is by pinning them securely in place with something like this.

I’ve only made tiny batches of both the frog decorations and the frog pins (they took ages to make!) – I’m taking them to my next event- the Bowhouse Winter Market on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th November, 2026 (St. Monans, Fife, Scotland).
